Pot still design and discussion

stripin and spirit

Postby wino1 » Wed Mar 26, 2014 10:12 am

Hello all,
I have just finished my second pot still, 59 l keg and 800 mm column. I have looked all over and have a question
Can I do a stripping run and than the next day do a spirit run?
any issues with that?

Thanks

Probably need 3 to 4 stripping runs to have enough to do a spirit run.

for efficiency that's the best way to do it, 3-4 runs, take all your stripped wash - water down to 40% (so it's not so highly flammable) and then run it to get a large yeild.

if you don't want to wait - you can indeed run a strip, then run that strip the next day - or even when your still has cooled down later that day if you want.

the yield however on a strip of just 1 wont be so great.

Why wait for the still to cool down? If I get the chance I do back to back runs... You waste a lot of energy heating up 15kg of stainless!

What volumes do you get from a stripping run? Say I have 55 liters of 10% wash and do a stripping run down to 20% what is the volume produced? is it 50% of 55 liters = 27.5 liters?

Depends on your still configuration, if you remove all the SGTs plates and RC it will begin probably at 55%-60% or with one plate and no RC your initial take off should easily be 65% and hold that for longer,
Using my FSD like that as a single plated stripper running full noise on gas a 200 ferment of bwko fills my boiler 4-5times and gives my about a 30l keg full of low wines and a few bottles of whitedog hearts for immediate consumption.
So from a 55l wash at 10% expect a maximum of 7-9l of low wines

Thanks Kiwi, very helpful, just trying to get an idea for storage. I am batching up some washes and just getting a feel for it all. Got a first gen 80 liter rum wash started yesterday and 3 x 55 TPW going as well. Hope to get a corn, wheat rye and sugar wash going over the next day or so. But need another drum to do that in.

Firstly you don't want to fit 55L wash into a 55L boiler. You are guaranteed a puke. But saying you did 2 runs half each.
Using the potstill calculator with 55L @ 10% stripping down to 20% says 12005 mL with an overall abv 37.20%, minus your foreshot.
