About to start my first pot on keg

Postby stubbydrainer » Sat Sep 17, 2011 10:32 pm

Well I've collected up a heap of 2" copper elbows, tube and bits and pieces to start my first pot still build, mounted on a 50l keg ( as well as some 4 " stuff for later on down the track)
but what I need to know now is (a) is there any rules of thumb regarding column diameter verses length ratio, is the length of the column a major consideration ?
(b) I going with a lieburg type condenser this time ( because they are easy to assemble)
but again are the lengths critical ?

cheers

Most people design the height of their column to make the collection point convenient.

Liebig length will have a direct relationship to cooling power. I wouldn't go below 7-800mm.

Thx 5Star
I will "mock up " the keg on a stand ( allowing room for Big-Dons 747 burner  ) and a demi-jon on the floor  and
I spose it's " full steam to the condenser" to coin a phrase :laughing-rolling: :laughing-rolling:

No need to collect on the floor mate, just angle your liebig to raise your collection point ;)

Like this.

The column is 500mm long, liebig is 700mm.

Cheers.

thx guys,
I've taken it all on board, and have been real busy, cutting tube, cleaning frantically to ensure good joints, levelling out an old veggie patch, burning 3 acres ,mowing 2 acres of grass, picking up the dog bones, trimming the hedge and generally dying of thirst throughout most of it, (the barmaid here only serves when the hunny doo's are done ,) now I'll get back to what I started to do this morning and it looks like im not gunna get much done before the sandman comes :angry-banghead: :angry-banghead: :angry-banghead:

cheers

Well got most of it done now ! :D :D :D

liebig is 830mm long ( outta tube ) column 550mm just gotta position the height so can joint the the top elbows, chuck in a ss compression joiner to attach liebig and do the flange to keg, and she's done 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-) OOOHH and I chucked a parrot together too just gotta put a catch funnel on it and polish her all up and presto

Iteven looks like the one in the piccy Mac ( sorta)
SBB all up I used 2/3 stick of silver solder :teasing-neener: :teasing-neener:

G'day BD
Not quite there yet Big Don, SBB was here all day yesty, and he bought his reg out and we give it a go, It is definitely better with his reg adjusted right up with the allen key adjustment, Shows that it'll take all the gas you can chuck at it ,Heaps of potential there left to go
missus caught me hooking the fuck'n thing direct to gas bottle last night :angry-tappingfoot: :angry-tappingfoot: :angry-tappingfoot: I hadn't seen her that mad for a long time :laughing-rolling: :laughing-rolling: :laughing-rolling: plenty hot tongue and cold shoulder in bed last night
I bought one of the hp regs as above and will get it this week ,Can't wait to see the look on her face when she hears it "taking off " :laughing-rolling: :laughing-rolling: :laughing-rolling: will be worth it :laughing-rolling: :laughing-rolling: :laughing-rolling:
