Can I use this?

Pot still design and discussion

Here's the bit I am eyeing off. After I took the lagging off and measured it, it's actually 2 1/2 inches.

If I cut it where the small tube for pressure reading is on the pipe, it gives me about a 640mm high column. If I chop it below that and plug the hole, it will be about 800mm High.

I started out on one of those 2in pots and a gas burner.

All you need is a heat source, a boiler and a cooling pump and hoses.

Lots of cuts jars (stubbies) too because 45L low wines runs is a lot of hooch.

600mm column from memory, think the liebig was around 700mm :liar:

You've got most of the ingredients for a very nice pot still there mate. How big is the bigger pipe, running away from camera on the left hand side? Looks like 4"?

Id be making a 4" pot with a 2.5" shotgun out of that batch of goodies ;-)

That is a stainless expansion joint. Woven hose.
There is a bit of 4" copper here, but might start off with a 2 1/2" to learn on.
I wouldn't have the slightest clue how to make a shotgun just yet. Maybe after this build, I'll have a go :)

I see.

A 2.5" pot is a good start. Making a shotgun, you could utilise those 90° elbows ;-)

A shotty is really not much harder to build than a leibig, and much more efficient. My first ever soldering job was my 2" shotty :handgestures-thumbupleft:

If you go with a leibig you'll need a few more fittings is all.

Try this link rob, it might not be as hard as you think. Just grap some scrap and have a go at soldering, you may surprise yourself.

I found this thread very helpful.

I'm with zak here. If you go 4" and build a shotty you will have parts for your bubbler when you upgrade :laughing-rolling:

Haha thanks guys. Talk me up from a 2 1/2 inch column with Liebig to going to work tomorrow to see if there is enough 4 inch for a column and a 2 1/2 inch shotty.

Is there a big difference in the column width?
I'm guessing the larger will run faster for stripping runs but would be similar speed for spirit runs?

If it's only been used for water, you're good to go.

The condenser will make more difference to run speed than column diameter, on a pot still. You'll be able to push <10L/hr through a 2.5" shotty. If your power source is up to it, of course.

Go a 2.5" column into a 2.5" shotty. Save the 4" for your bubbler build ;-)

Yea I will go 2 1/2 inch I think.

What length of shotgun would I need to build? I gotta go have a look to see what small copper I have for the tubes.
Would it work with only a couple of 1 inch tubes? I know I have some of that laying around. Just need to see if there is smaller

Go with 6 or 7x 1/2" tubes... 500mm long will be plenty.

I was going to have a go at making a shotgun condenser today, but realised I don't have enough 2.5" pipe.
I have a 600mm long piece I was planning to use as the column and I only have a 350mm piece left over for the condenser.

Would 350mm with 6 1/2" inner tubes be enough? If not, would a 350mm column with a 500mm condenser be better?
Or do I just buy more pipe or run with a liebig for now?
Advice please.

Cheers
Rob

Also, If i was to put a reflux shotty on, what would be the ideal length for this and number of tubes?

Personally I would be going with the 500mm shotty and 350 column. I recon that will be fine.

Why do you want a rc on your pot? I don't think I've seen one used on a pot, I recon it would be neither here nor there, too much reflux for a pot but not enough packing or length for a reflux? Not sure on that one.

I'd use a 350mm column, with a 500mm shotty. That way you can use the shotty for your bubbler later on :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Don't bother with an RC on your pot ;-)

Cheers woodduck and Zak.
Yea I wasn't sure if I could use this as both a pot and reflux to make flavoured and neutrals.
Not to worry. Ill make it as a normal pot so I can get into some of these flavoured whiskeys I have been reading so much about..

Good plan mate.

I started out intending to build a Boka reflux, then got sidetracked and turned it into a pot still instead.

The other week I cut up my half finished boka to use the copper for my 6" bubbler :laughing-rolling: I'm looking forward to making neutral one day, but for now I'm having too much fun with my whiskeys and rum!

I would use 2inch tri clamps on the ends of the condencer ,so ya may have ta get a couple of 2.5-2inch reducer's ,then the ferrules will slide into the reducers ,good for ya pot and good ta go for ya bubbler in the future.cheers hillzabilly

Well I have made a start. Marked and drilled the 6 holes for the condenser.
I didn't manage to get the plate perfectly flat, but figured it would be fine hey?

Ill start a build thread shortly.
Thanks for everyones help
