Time to start building mods for turbo to pot still conversio

Postby rumdidlydum » Sat Dec 06, 2014 11:50 pm

Hi all. Picked up some pipes and fittings and made a start on the condenser and parrot.
The inner tube has spiral dents running the length to assist with a spiral motion to the vapor. Also I spiraled the same direction with some solder to get the water to spiral up the condenser. The inner tube is 19mm and outer 1 1/2.
Made a start on the parrot also. Now the fun part of cleaning it up. I thought has any one used a sand blaster on cooper? And what did it turn out like. I have access to one. Might try it on a piece of scrap?
My plan is to use 2" for the column and 2 x 90' bends. Add a controller to element and be able to adjust the height of the condensor.
I can't wait to try some of the great rum recipes.
I know how everyone loves pics so here you go.'
Any way any constructive criticism so far?

Havnt used a sandblaster but a basis citric acid bath (find citric acid with baking goods at supermarkets) and a quick polish does the job sweet

If you have access to a big enough blaster use it, will give it a nice even clean finish then polishing is easy from there ;-)

Sandblasting might pitt the copper? I know it's not good for aluminium..

Soda blasting is the go mate if ya can but it's a bit of a cheat considering some of the effort the blokes here go to to get that shiny shine by hand 8-} but fk if I could I would :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Looking good. I have started collecting bits of copper for a t500 conversion also. Am thinking of a pelican copy for stripping runs. Nice easy project to get me going.

I had to make an extra spacer for the clamp to crush up the pipes.
Nice and flush surfaces

Great build mate love the tripot look shes a bit tall for a pot still you may get a lil reflux if you insulate the main colum it should stop the reflux a lil

Good luck and great build

I was thinking its a bit tall, no probs I've got a couple more clamps il just cut a section out and put an easy flange in.

I've enjoyed working with copper, never realy had much to do with it. Good to learn new skills

Thanks for your input. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

The tripod works well the lid is a bit flimsy. Also works great as a stand when i take it off.

My 3" pot is about a metre tall and I dont get any noticeable reflux... Set your column height and condenser angle to suit your collection height, not some theoretical dribble about passive reflux etc :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Finally finshed the turbo to pot convertion. :happy-partydance:
I had to some bracing of condencer due to weight, but happy with the out come, i can still adjust the angle.
Yesterday i spent some time chasing coolant leaks, even running out the condenser to the parrot. :handgestures-thumbdown:
But she is all done now. Thanks to those who had guided me. And i can't wait to run my 1st mcrum thought.
I started gathering parts for a controller but yet to build. Im going to go with a wall outlet and a analog amp meter..

If any one sees something not quite right let me know... :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Thanks all
