keg boiler requirements

Postby Plumby » Sat Jan 31, 2015 8:53 pm

Hi all, just scored 2 50 litre stainless steel kegs, one has a the spear removed and a 34-35mm hole drilled in the bottom. The other is stock standard, spear and all. The one with the spear removed and 34-35mm hole I was thinking of using as my boiler, so I need a element probably 2400w )voltage controller, fill port, and empty port. Do i need a anything else for the boiler? When funds allow I will be mounting a Macstill 4 inch pot still on top of the keg.

Got any pics mate, 34-35 hole might be a problem, I think the standard element port size is 32 mm but could be wrong.

This may help

The hole shouldn't be a problem since he'll most likely mount the elements on the side and use the bottom as a drainage hole.

OR, he could also flip it over, but I'm presuming that he wants to normal.

But yes, elements are 32mm. I recommend FSD products and the use of two elements as opposed to only having one installed.

Just a thought, but this is what I did with my boiler using a 50 litre keg.

Flipped it upside down so I could use the 2" hole for a FSD drain kit.

I then grinder off the keg base (which was now the top of my boiler, miunted two handles and cut a hole on the new top and mounted a still mount and fill port.

Then I built a box section on the side of my boiler at the bottom and welded in two FSD element ports.

The boiler will out live me and will meet all my hobbie demands I can throw at it.

Your boiler is very well done Matt, hopefully my 80 L version will turn out as nice.

You could do one like this, one of the best keg boiler builds I've seen here

viewtopic.php?f=49&t=7213&p=124773#p124773

Here's what i'd do... 4 in fillport, use the 34-35mm as a drain, leave the 2in ferrule and attach still with reducer, 2 x elements are the go especially with a pot as you will be stripping. I'd look at fitting legs, to be able to get a bucket under the drain :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Sorry guys should have been clearer in my description. The 34-35mm hole is on the side at the bottom, the person I got both the kegs from started a build but gave up for some reason. If I weld a patch over the existing hole can I then drill a 32mm hole in the bit of stainless I used as a patch? I have another keg here completely un touched. Might be easier to start a fresh and patch the other one and ust it for low wine storage.

Build a box section over over the hole so you can install 2 elements, then use the second keg to age spirits

Have you got a pic o your boiler, specifically the box section, matt? Makes sense to me because I've seen it but a pic might help the other guys. Great idea in this instance! :handgestures-thumbupleft:
