Vm/lm being run as a pot

Postby JayBee » Fri Jul 17, 2015 9:07 am

Hi build myself a vm/lm combo, looking to run it as a pot for mollasses rums, what configuration would get the best results?
-Removing boka head and blanking leaving coloum with/without packing?
-leave boka head run without coloum packing?
-with a voltage controller do you run pots flat out or run reduced voltage?

I have had one go with coloum and boka head removed with terrible results, it tasted like the whole run was tails.

Thanks

Yeah I would take off the boka head and cap it and also remove the valve so it's impossible to forget to open it

I would remove packing.

Your whole run prob tasted like tails if you ran it too hard and fast.

Also for pot runs you really need to strip then spirit run. What recipe did you run?

hey mate
If it was me I would remove the LM head and blank off the tee. Also remove the gate valve to prevent possible pressure build up (explosion) with the top blanked and valve shut.

strip at high power then use controller on spirit run.

Cheers lads, will give it a go right now, just turned it on.
Recipe was Macstills 3kg suger, 3kg mollasses, 70g lowans yeast, pinch of epsoms salts.
Last run was with no coloum so the "T" was only about 100mm above the keg, and i was using the controller.

For stripping runs, if i only want a small batch to try is it worth doing 1 strip and then put it straight back in watered down to do a final run?

Yeah mate you can do that but you will have a low yield of hearts cut.

If you strip it down a fair way you won't need to water back much it will be near 40% but check anyway

Andy, it was pretty wild gear, had on oak dominos for 2 weeks but didn't change the taste. If i ever had to lick a wet dog that is what i could imagine it would taste like.
I know the cuts were not as harsh as they should have been, and may have run it too fast also.
All good, lesson learnt

yeah if its wet dog its definitely too far into tails- for me its a starts to taste a bit like wet cardboard then wet dog :laughing-rolling:

also rum usually takes a while to age. UNFORTUNATELY!!

Righto, i done a quick stripping run 8l @ 60% then straight back in for spirit run and kept 3l @ 70%
Half on french oak, half on medium American oak
See what happens
