Can someone please point me to some info how a carter head works. I've seen the few threads here but I want to know more about how it works, how it's used etc.

Cheers,
Prof. Green.

Ive read over these threads also and im still wondering how they work.
So far i assume for a 4"it may have a 2" (or something similar) going sideways out of the column into a 90 degree bend down as a bubble cap/pipe (unsure of terms) and then a larger column surrounds this going up with enough room for a gin basket in a blockhead or maybe like a thumper.
Surrounded by a glass section, or not and with a drain at the bottom.

I may be wayyy off and may very well be as i havent found any build pics to tell me otherwise. Just looks like a thumper with a drain instead of a downcomer

Try this one. I think it's the one. It's pretty long but full of info.

Hmm don't know how I missed those threads, I did search for them.

Now I understand how it works; I was missing one crucial bit of information - the vapour deflection tube. It makes sense to me now.

Cheers,
Prof. Green.

If you choose to make a C/Head I'd also put slots or V shapes in the bottom of the tube that goes into the sight glass.
That way you get the bubbling vapour broken up into smaller bubbles like you do with a bubble cap plate.

Just a thought.
My avatar is the C H glass module.

These are extremely useful pieces of equipment.
Vodka infusions, gin and can be used as a thumper as well.

You'll wonder how you ever made gin without one once you've built/bought a Carter Head. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

So at what point in the process do you open the valve on the sight glass?

Cheers,
Prof. Green.

Mine is slotted, they just don't show in low res pic.

As most don't have a reflux return, the valve prevents flooding, as well as allowing you to remove oil/flavour rich alcohol that has refluxed through the botanicals. this can then be used for blending or adding to the next batch.
the glass lets you monitor depth
