3 inch Boka head on 4 inch column

Postby NFI » Fri Jan 03, 2025 1:44 pm

For all the experienced Boka peoples

I know very little about bokas and even less about running one but my question is can you successfully run a 3" boka head on a 4" packed section?
Successful being will it run as good as (fast as) a full 3" boka and/or will it run faster than a standard 2" boka.

I have a 4" 4 plate, plated still with 500 mm packed section. If I remove plates and pack the plate tower and section all up I can get a total of 1570mm of packed section.
Topped of with a short 4" to 3" reducer and then the 3" boka head and 3" double helix coil setup.
Just trying to build on the modular still setup I already have.
I do a lot of neutral and am hoping to find a faster throughput. On the plated still I I do a stripping (or2 or 3) and then the spirit run and assume that would still be best on the boka.
I run a 100L boiler with 2x 2400W elements

One big question mate so you have a 4 plate bubbler with a packed section for making neutral so why even bother with a boka when you already have the best of both worlds

The bubbler does work well on both for sure. Running neutral on a spirit run at roughly 2.4LPH is okay but I was hoping to get faster output and from what I have read ( and I know you cant belive it all) reports of getting faster "quality" output from 3" and 4" bokas and some 4" VM reflux stills.

If the only thing that will get me faster output is moving to 6" or 8" and that is the only way, then that's what I need to know, not that I will be doing that any time soon.

A coil isn’t as efficient as a shotgun condenser .

Well mate I have had a look and couldn't find any reference to 3 and 4" boka's so if you have some info bring it on so we can all debunk the claim that a 4" boka can beat 2.4L/hour :laughing-rolling:

Mate if your worried about long spirit run times just put a bit less in the boiler and do it over 2 days :laughing-rolling:

Now I am a tragic with copper :scared-eek: and the fact of making a 4" boka setup to sit ontop of a bubbler just doesn't cut the mustard mate so it does look like this is just a brain fart :laughing-rolling: looking for something that isn't there sorry as 2.4L/hour is the about the max one can get out of 4" in any configuration when doing reflux :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Maybe change everything after reflux condenser to 3 inch? That meaning have a 3" condenser, might be a stig question for some data on whether that would change much.

My first maiden spirit run was over 15 hours with the reflux alcoengine . That's a big day! I was thinking of doing the above. But diluting it with more water to say 20% then run it over two days. It's only a neutral run so not worried about any flavour carrying over to the final product.

Thoughts?

I had the same issue with 55 litres into my boiler and using the 2” alcoline reflux column. 13 to 14 hour days in the garage doing a spirit run.
Within 6 weeks i placed an order with stig for the 4” FSD neutraliser.
Now i can run the same volume in boiler and be finished in just over 6 hours. And it tastes like a better product too.

Thanks all, looks like I can shelve that experiment and save a few dollars.
