CCVM 3". Or is it?

Postby icewind » Fri May 29, 2020 3:51 pm

got a ccvm still in amongst a ton of other gear from one of the members on this site who sold his gear upon exiting the scene.

havn't had a chance to use it till now, just realised she's a 3" column.

However at the base is a reducer to 2". The 3" column itself is around 1.5m tall and is pure packing, then a second piece attaches to the top of the column and goes 90 degrees for a horizontal condenser. This second piece is 2".

Will this run as a proper 3" still?

Yes even 4" bubblers can be run via a 2" hole. The 3" packed section is what matters :handgestures-thumbupleft: reducing from 3 to 2 has something to do with reflux ratios. Someone with way more brains than me will be able to explain :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Looks like the condenser moves, I would call it condenser controlled liquid management CCLM, its closer to a boka than a vapour management jobbie
Moving the coil in and out would change how far up the vapour condenses in relation to the outlet in the middle of the arm, the rest would just drain back to the column via the external drain
I cant see any reason it wont work as such (no doubt the builder used it heaps), interesting height saving design

The size changes wont effect the reflux ratio cause its LM not VM

If the condenser is fixed it would technically be a CM and you would adust out put via coolant flow, which i like less

yeh, its a condensor controlled, coil moves in and out. longest damn condensor coil ive seen tbh (prob around 50-60cm)

so if it is technically LM, what does that mean in how i do a run? I've been using a 2" VM, and before that a T500.

The arm comes off at more like 100°, creating a downward slope towards the column, the valve is the coil and how it's situated compared to the position to the outlet halfway up the arm, it would convert all vapour to liquid by a certain point of the condenser (say halfway), if that point was below the outlet, you would be in 100% reflux, if the end of the condenser was above the outlet there would be near zero reflux as (pretty much) all of the liquid would drop through the outlet

Interestingly you could add a condenser to the outlet and make it a vm, but i suspect you would get smearing problems, might be worth using a liebig as a product director anyways, seems a common mod to LM's - the outlet is going to end up 2m+ in the air and it's safer to have cooler product at the end of the day
