Thermometer mounting

Postby Sam. » Mon Dec 12, 2011 7:28 pm

What ways are people using to mount their thermometers in the vapour path? Is it as simple as drilling the right size hole so it's a nice close tolerance fit? or are you making a little cylinder to put it in so theres no actual hole in the column?

The thermometer I would be using is just the digital stick type you get from beerbelly or jaycar.

I drilled a 6.5mm hole in the takeoff then soldered into this a short length of 1/4" tube. My thermometer with a bit of Teflon tape wound around it is a perfect fit inside the 1/4" tube.

I prefer the blanked off tube method, that way if ya thermometer shits itself you can replace it , or change the batteries without any bother, just crimp the tube for a firm fit near the end and bob's ya aunties live in boyfriend ;)

1/4 inch tube seems to fit many digi thermometers

i dont even bother wrapping in tape or a seal, seem a bit of liquid gets in the tube and bit of capillary effect and stops any steam coming out

works for me anyway :)

Yep, 1/4" tube, I have 2 of them, one tape wound and the other bound in place with some cloth impregnated flour paste ( easy to do and simple to remove with a quick slice of a blade). Also lasts for many consecutive runs before it needs replacing - and I'm talking 20 runs or more.

Cheers.

1/4 tube with the inside of the still end soldered shut, works like a thermowell (sp) and no need for flour paste or PTFE tape
