i've been ordering these from over east for years, suddenly there's a warning on sites that they do not ship G-of-P to WA.
i contacted the WA Dept of Agriculture and they said it's ok, so long as 3 x conditions are met.( which from memory, have always applied anyway)
1. the grains are dried
2. they are in a sealed bag
3. the scientific name is on the label (Amomum melegueta)
i contacted a supplier, and they are sending a batch as we speak.
G-of-P are an X/10 ingredient in my favourite gin, so despite the cost ($10/10gm), i will keep using it for now.
has anyone tried to use a substitute?
1. 50% black pepper/25% grnd cardomom/25% grnd ginger?
2. equal parts of the 3 x above?
i tasted a G-of-P yesterday, it was peppery with other subtle flavours.
