Re-distilling gin

Re-distilling gin

Postby scottb » Sat Oct 31, 2020 12:33 pm

Hi - newbie to distilling; I am running a LM column still.
I have macerated some gin and want to run through the still again to make it clear. When I do this do I need to treat the output like the original run i.e take off the first 100ml etc or would all the methanol have been distilled out in the first run?
thanks S

PS - will the 2nd distilling run also have a 'new set' of heads, hearts, and tails also? S

no need to do cuts as in heads hearts tails but collect in small jar to catch different components there is some flavours that can be overpowering cinamon as an example and some oils you may or not want.. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Carbon filtering will also remove flavour .

If you've already done cuts and have macerated in just hearts then no need to do cuts again.

Just run it in pot still mode, as if you were doing a spirit run. Discard the first 10mL/5L which will have a bitter juniper note. Then run until it starts tasting a bit "tailsy" off the still.

Dilute it down to 44-45% and then let it sit for 4-5 weeks to allow all the flavours to balance out.

Thank you everyone.
I have some 'neutral' heads from a different run. Would you suggest using this in the 2nd distillation as well, or not?

Nope, only use hearts for making gin.
