Do you like head?

Postby Woods314 » Sun Sep 09, 2018 9:20 pm

Just having a few beers, I brew using Coopers light malt, 1 kg dextrose, 12 grams of Cascade pellets and 12 grams of Warrior. Tonight I thought I’d try something different. Now I know the purists will say extract is shit, but it takes me an hour or two to put on a couple of brews, so that’s where I’m coming from. Anyhow, back to the subject, I have in my fridge something the purists will say I shit too, but it happens to be iso hops ( hop oil some people call it). So I tried a drop of the iso hops in my glass of beer and being a lover of bitter beer, I thought this is fucking nice. So to cut a not very long story short, next thing I know, I’m putting three drops in my glass of beer, funny thing is, it ends up with the creamyist head I have ever seen! So if ya like bitter beer and creamy head, try this!

Thanks for the tip.
Extract is as much of an art as all-grain, and some of my Beer Club cohorts make some outstanding extracts.
Don't let 'em stigmatize you!

I've done all grain and found flavour, mouth feel and head to be good. Hate the goddamn time it takes to do the brews though. Like a full day to do two two batches compared to a couple of hours max for the extract. Head and mouth feel are lacking in most extracts. I'm going back to extract for that reason alone.
Isohops I've never tried. Does it make a difference when you put it in the fermenter?

ISO hops can, apparently, be added at any time, some put it in the fermenter, which is what I used to do, some add it after fermentation in the fermenter or keg and as I have found, adding to your glass then pouring the beer. It probably boils down to personal preference.

When I used to add it to the fermenter I don’t recall it improving the head, but it did bitter the beer. Three drops in a glass is a lot of iso hops and I would have never added the equivalent amount to a fermenter which by my rough calculations would be about 15 ml in 20 litres.

All I do is kit-and-kilo.
So a can from brew shop and a kilo of sugar, yes plain old sugar.
and I dont get any complaints, i believe its in the process and the storeage.
Heads not a problem for me, I pulled these about 2 hours ago trying to grease up a 5 Star Client :laughing-rolling:
The dark one is an Old Clone and the light one is a Wheat Beer (my go to)
Keg and gas for 24 hours at 50PSI then fun time

I just recovered my glass from last night and the head was still in the bottom of the glass, I will post photos when it happens again!

My head foam runs down the glass with each mouth full so head is not a problem with my extract brew even without the iso hops, and I am not a fan of malty beers, so hops are my friend! You could probably say I am am a hop head! I have fifty bags of hop pellets in my freezer and kg bags of white powder on my shelf ( dextrose ). Cops would have a ball, except the old sarge who is a home brewer and knows what I have. You all know what a fifty bag is, don’t you?

Did you buy iso hops or did you make it yourself? I want to try one of these things
