To stir or not to stir that is the question

Postby Wellsy » Tue Sep 15, 2020 3:36 pm

Hey guys
Is there any advantage to giving a slowly fermenting wash, or a fast one for that matter, a good stir up to make sure all the yeasties get at all the goodness stuck on the bottom.

Or is it just a good way to ensure you have a nice cloudy wash as it was never given a chance to settle out.

Appreciate the feedback

I have stirred when the ferment is so fast that it is just about to bubble over the top of the fermenter.

I have pitched the dry yeast and not stirred at all.

I have pitched rehydrated yeast and stirred, but also not stirred.

Made no difference.

Having said that I always rack the fermented wash into another container and let it settle for a week or two to completely clear before running it through the still.

Stirring does get rid of gases quicker.

Horses for courses IMHO

Cheers

HG

Thanks HG
I am looking for generational improvements so need the backset to start the next fermentation.

I stir, because I'm impatient, and I like to see things happen. I don't think it accelerates anything though. On the other hand, distributing the mixture can't be bad, can it?

Opening the lid and allowing oxygen causing oxidization and potentially other nasty things in could cause infections .
You could also introduce natural air born yeasts that will effect the mix
This is “worst case scenario” but food for thought

True true... :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I just slosh the drums around. No opening necessary.

Thanks again guys
So safest option is to keep everything closed up until fermentation has run its course and you are ready to rack off your wash

If it’s fermenting well it will create its own convection to push it around

A wash that is fermenting does not clear and a finished wash if you stir it up will re clear so stirring up a wash is not going to make a difference but if you have a wash temperature controlled and take out on a hot day when it heats up that can stir up the wash plus if have a air lock will start to bubble because of the temperature change.
