Copper Pipe spirit outlet on T500

Postby NoHope » Thu Jun 23, 2022 5:50 pm

i have seen in "Running a T500 the Proper Way" mentioned to get rid of the plastic spirit drain hose and use copper instead which im interested in doing and would like peoples opinion pros or cons ,as my son works in the Air-Con trade he has access to varying sizes of copper pipe Ive taken some internal and external measurements with a Caliper and found the
T500 spirit drain is 6.32mm O/D and 4.4mm I/D so im going to do is cut small piece of plastic about 10mm longer than spirit drain push a copper pipe that is 6.27mmO/D and 4.4 I/D almost identical to the T500 spirit drain into the plastic and to this im soldering a longer piece of copper tube that is 9.5mm O/D and 7mm I/D long enough to reach a collection jar, im hoping this will work out any thoughts are most appreciated Cheers

Hi NoHope,

I cut some 1/2" copper pipe and soldered them together with a 90* elbow. It's a bit heavy to just hang off
the spirit outlet, so a piece of 3/4" copper pipe was cut and notched to locate in the rim of the boiler, and
support the 1/2" pipe. An "O" ring keeps it in place. You could use anything for the support though.

I cut a piece of the supplied plastic hose just a little shorter than the outlet and pushed it on, then wrapped
ptfe tape around it until the 1/2" pipe was just a sliding fit. Making sure the whole thing angles down a little,
I haven't had any leaks, and it works like a charm.

Hope that helps.

I've used a bit of brass joiner, drill a hole through it to fit the thickest tube, the drill half out bigger for the larger tube and soldier it in place with aquasafe.

What's wrong with brass?
My water taps are brass, I've got brass taps in kegs, I've never heard of anyone in history getting brass poisoning other them from fumes or rare allergic reactions.
It's not affected by solvents like plastic.

Worse case just do the same thing with copper.

Brass contains lead.
Been many discussions here about it.

Whats wrong with brass? We aint distilling water. Ethanol is a powerful solvent. Lead builds up in your body till its toxic. Might be 5years might be 50years. No one is gunna come round make sure theres no lead in your setup. Use your brain then make desicions.

I will let it lay then, it's just easy to get confused when so many off the shelf reflux style systems have brass connections and fittings on them.

If you look close most will have brass on the water connections.
And as far as off the shelf , they don’t give a shit about your health , we do

It’s all good no hope, never be afraid to ask the questions mate.

It just gets a little frustrating when people offer dangerous advice and then question why it is dangerous that’s all :)

Brass is just another of our not up for discussion items on the forum. We want everyone to be safe it really is that simple

No issue at all mate.
You asked a question and got answers, most right and some completely irresponsible.
That’s what the forum is all about , getting the information :handgestures-thumbupleft:

One of the reason i make my own. Another reason is lots of distillery store in plastic. No thanks.
You just gotta think are you happy with strong solvents in contact with brass and plastic. Are you happy to leave it up to big companies to look after your well being? Because I can gaurantee the only thing they are worried about is the stuff that folds. They dont give a stuff about you or anyone else that buys their product, all they care is that you keep buying it..

There is a lot of old spirit that uses was made using dodgy practice.

Hi team,

I have just bought a 2" sight glass about 5 - 6" long. It comes with two Brass tri adaptors for the T500 boiler & condenser.

Reading here Brass is not a good thing, or has it improved over the years.

Will it be ok or just take it back & find one with the tri fittings in Stainless
