I have made a few of these lately in 4" and found no need to heat the pipe first and also I found silver solder worked with Mapp for the 1/4 pipe, no need for brazing.
Also I must say there is something really satisfying making your own pipe flanges.

Where does everyone direct there blowtorch when soldering the ring on. I can do most joins but for some reason easy flanges are a complete pain in the arse for me the solder doesn't wanna do what I want it to. I aim for where the inner part of the ring meets the flanged pipe. Any help would be appreciated I'm obviously fucking up something that should be piss easy

I aim the point of the flame 15 to 20 mm above the ring, straight at the pipe :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Did my whole modular build with this method. Cuts the cost way down vs buying ferrules, and as it was said earlier, satisfying to make your own. Because of this, with the only exceptions bieng the clamps and the glasses, every part of my build came off the shelves of local plumbing supply. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Has everybody found it fairly easy to seal using this method?

I mean the flanges sit pretty flush, but would still take a fairly decent gasket to make them vapour tight...

I'm thinking the cork...not sure if silicone is going to cut it for my flanges...

cork,

1.5mm if you have flanges dead flat...needless to say the triclamp will pull em up nice without too much hassle.

Silicone not sure...has a tendancy to magically disappear....here have a glass of my new silicone inspired whisky...

I'm pretty sure others have used cork successfully, i just tested mine with the "everlasting PTFE gasket". Sealed up for testing purposes, I have high hopes for its long term sucess...

bt1 those were the silicone o'rings in their SGK's that did that, the silicone tri clamp seals seem to be much more hardy and I'm yet to see any change in them.

That's why I mentioned the "heat rated" in my previous post ;-)

kk,

now it makes a bit more sense...this heat rate you sell em cos I'm looking for a soft flat gasket for the glasser.

I reckon you cut your own from silicone bake ware, it's food safe and rated to 450c.... from woolies or coles :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Hi Mac

I noticed on your RC tutorial that you just soldered the ring on

Do you still recommend flaring the end before fitting the ring or is it not really necessary.? Or are there some structural pieces that do/don't need the flaring .

Sorry bit confused :angry-banghead:

Hey Yummy,

Thought i'd add here to reaffirm, as I have done both of these in the last week.

I originally did a lot of pieces by flaring (and soldering ring on) for 'structural joints', and now since just using the ring only method, I would use this for everything from now on...

It it very strong, and if you have the ability to silver braze/hard solder (MAP gas), even stronger.

Plus I had a lot of issues getting everything square and straight with the flaring method (still am :angry-banghead: ).

Thumbs up for the 1/4" ring from me :handgestures-thumbupleft:
